Teñidos naturales - Aprovechando la floración del tilo

Ultimamente me he dedicado a experimentar con tintes naturales y aprovechando que los tilos han florecido, recolecté una buena cantidad de flores para preparar un baño de tintura.

Ya desde el recipiente donde lo tuve calentando a fuego lento, el color me sorprendió gratamente, miren si nó...

I've been experiencing with natural dyes lately, and as linden have bloomed, I've collected a good quantity of their flowes to make a dye bath.
Already from the very pot where I've simmered it the color surprised me pleasantly, look if not...

Sobre la tela el resultado es un rosa viejo pálido y modificándolo con hierro se logra un hermoso lavanda suave. Juntos hacen una bella paleta de colores.

Como las flores duran muy poco tiempo en el árbol, guardé un poco para tener a mano en futuros proyectos, espero que las flores al secarse den un color igualmente intenso.

On the fabric the result is a pale old rose and modifying it with iron turns to a lovely pale lavender. Together the the make a nice color palette.

As flowers last very short time in the tree, I've kept a few to have on hand for future projects, I hope the dried flowers give the same intense color.

Eco-print - Vuelta a lo natural

Con toda esta movida de lo orgánico me la paso recolectando hojas y flores por todo el barrio, con algunas he logrado resultados interesantes con el estampado ecológico o eco-print.

Claro que es tan apasionante como frustrante, la ansiosa espera para abrir los atados a veces termina en decepción, pero solo a veces, otras muchas nos da gratísimas sorpresas porque en el trato con la naturaleza no todo puede estar ciento por ciento calculado, ella decide y así debe ser.

De mis ensayos aprendí que las hojas del rosal da buenos resultados casi siempre, también el arce, el eucaliptus y el roble. El malvón deja una impresión muy fuerte aún sin necesidad de sumergirla en solución de hierro.

Otra lección (aunque no totalmente aprendida) es ser paciente, dejar las hojas en remojo varios días es importante, no abrir los atados demasiado pronto también, hay hojas que dejas su impronta de inmediato pero otras requieren un cierto tiempo de reposo. Pero aunque la curiosidad mató al gato yo no puedo resistir espiar, al menos una punta, para ver si se logró una buena imagen o no.

With all this organic movement I keep on collecting flowers and leaves all over the neighborhood, with some of them I’ve gotten interesting results in eco-printing.

Of course it is as fascinating as frustrating, the  anxious wait to open the bindings sometimes ends in disappointment, but only sometimes, many others give very pleasant surprises, because when it comes to nature not everything can be a hundred percent calculated, she decides and it should be so.

From my attempts I learned that rose leaves give good results most of the times, so do maple, eucalyptus and oak. Geranium leaves a strong print even without dipping into iron solution.

Another lesson (although not fully learned) is to be patient, let the leaves soaking several days  is important, also  not to open the bundles too soon, some leaves print immediately but others need to rest tied more time. But even the curiosity killed the cat I cannot resist spying, at least a bit, if I’ve got a nice print or not.

La culminación de todo este proceso es elegir cuales estampas usar en cada proyecto y verlo cobrar vida en cada trabajo terminado.

The culmination of all this process is to choose which prints to use for each project and see it coming to life in each finished work.  

Algo nuevo para recibir la primavera

El cambio de estación siempre nos produce ese deseo de renovación y si el cambio es de invierno a primavera, mucho mas aún.

Algo similar me pasa con el diseño, las ideas bullen al acercarse una nueva estación y seguro algo nuevo surge para estrenar la temporada.

Como suele suceder, la naturaleza es mi gran inspiradora y mi cuaderno de notas se fue llenando de hojas. Asi nació esta colección que llamé "windfall" que de alguna manera es una forma de enlazar ambos equinoccios, una alfombra de hojas de otoño con los colores brillantes de la primavera

The change of season always produces a desire of renewal and even more when we pass from winter to spring.

Something similar occurs to me with design, ideas explode in my mind when a new season is approaching and certainly anything new will emerge to receive de season.

As usual, nature is my greatest inspiration and my sketchbook was filling with leaves. So this new collection, that I called "windfall", was born and  somehow is a way to link together both equinoxes, a carpet of autumn leaves with the bright colors of the spring.

Con la naturaleza de modelo

Totalmente imbuida del espíritu ecologista que parece ser la tendencia de este siglo (bien!!!!) comencé a investigar sobre los tintes naturales.

Mi primera experiencia es con eco-print, ya que puedo recoger hojas de mi jardín (y jardines vecinos, shhh) para estampar mis telas.

Generalmente las telas que más se utilizan son aquellas de procedencia animal como la lana o la seda, como yo utilizo algodón se hace un poco más difícil y he tenido más resultados fallidos que exitosos.  Pero persevera y triunfarás!

Fully imbued with the environmentalist spirit that seems to be the trend of this century (well !!!!),  I began to investigate about natural dyes.

My first experience is with eco-print, since I can collect leaves from my garden-and my neighbours’ garden, shhh- to print my fabrics.

Generally  the most used fabrics are those of animal origin, such as wool or silk, as I use cotton it becomes a bit more difficult and I have had more failed than successful results. But persevere and you will triumph!

Sobre todo se trata de entrenar la paciencia, cuando mi natural ansiedad me lleva a abrir el atado en seguida que sale de la cacerola (las telas con las hojas a estampar se enrollan  y se atan en un cilindro y se llevan al vapor)  por lo general  la impresión es muy pobre, cuando lo dejo varios días la cosa cambia radicalmente. Así que también es buen método de autocontrol para desacelerarnos -pero como cuesta –.

Above all it is about training patience, when my natural anxiety takes me to open the bundle (the fabrics with the leaves to be printed are rolled up and tied in a bundle and taken to the steam) as soon as they come out of the pan usually the impression is very poor, when I leave it for several days all changes radically. So it is also a good method of self-control to slow down - but how hard it is-.

Cuando todo va bien las imágenes que se logran son realmente hermosas y vale pena compartirlas.

When everything goes well the prints you get are really beautiful and worth to share them.

El frente y el revés de las hojas dejan distintas impresiones, acá se ve claramente como con hojas de rosal el lado del frente dejó la silueta y el dorso copió cada detalle. Ambas caras me parecen hermosas y se complementan muy bien juntas.

The front and the back side of the leaves make different impressions, you can see clearly here how the rose leaves left a silhouette with front side while the back side has copied every detail. Both sides look gorgeous to me and complement very well together. 

El roble es otra de las hojas que dejan una interesante impresión, el malvón y el eucalyptus también tienen muy buena pigmentación para transferir.

Oak leaves also give an interesting print, as well as geranium and eucalyptus, all have nice pigmentation to transfer.

Algunas de las telas las teñí a mano previamente y luego estampé las hojas.

Some of the fabrics were previously dyed and eco-printed afterwards.

Otras las sumergí una media hora en una solución de agua y óxido de hierro.

Se puede obtener con sulfato de hierro o simplemente dejando clavos u otras piezas de hierro en agua o vinagre hasta que van soltando el óxido. Agregamos parte al agua donde vamos a teñir la tela y lo dejamos reposar, puede ser en caliente o en frío. Obviamente cuanto más tiempo más oscuro será el resultado.

Some others were submerge about half an hour in a solution of water and iron oxide.

Can be obtained with iron sulfate or simply leaving nails or iron pieces in water or vinegar until they release the oxide. We add part of that to the water where we're going to dye the fabric and we let it rest for a while, can be warm or cold water. Obviously the longer the darker the result will be.

A todo esto, descubrí el sashiko que es un tipo de bordado japonés (cuando no?) que agrega un poco más de personalidad a cada trabajo.

Besides, I have discovered Sashiko, which is a kind of Japanese (as always...) embroidery  that adds a bit more personality to each work.

Al final todo se trata de experimentar, disfrutar y divertirse, aunque cuando las cosas no salen como queremos nos den ganas de prender fuego a todo. 

Pero no! Dominemos ese caracter, entremos en estado zen y empecemos nuevamente, porque se aprende tanto de los aciertos como de los errores -o eso dicen-.

Finally everything is about to experiment, enjoying and having fun, even when things don't go as we like and want to set everything on fire.

But no! Control that temper, let's be in a Zen state and let's start all over again, because you learn as much from success as from mistake -or so they say-.

Estampando con sellos

Y llegó el otoño y  a mi siempre me pone pilas para empezar a trabajar en algo nuevo, en una palabra, pone de nuevo la máquina en funcionamiento que con el verano venía muyyyy lenta -por no decir en "pause"-.

Hacía tiempo que quería probar con otros métodos de estampado, me puse a hacer unos sellos en goma y me encantó la técnica. Me divertí mucho armándolos y ni que decir lo que disfruté estampando.

And the autumn came and it always renews my desire to work, in a word, it turns the machine on again that during the summer was in “pause” mode.

I had wanted to try other stamping methods for some time, so I started to make some rubber stamps and I really loved the technique. I had a lot of fun making them and what to say how much I enjoyed stamping.

Trabajé con figuras geométricas que combinándolas permiten lograr muchos patrones diferentes con el mismo sello. Este método también facilita estampar de en una sola vez varios colores, a diferencia de la serigrafía que se estampa color por color, un schablón por cada color y es necesario esperar que seque cada uno.

I worked with geometric figures which combined allow to get a lot of different patterns with the same stamp. This method also makes easier to print several colors at once, unlike screen-printing that you have to print color by color, one screen for each color and it’s necessary to wait for every color to dry. 

Hice algunos almohadones y también bolsitos porta cosméticos-lápices-o lo que sea. Me encantó la técnica, me divertí tanto haciendo los sellos como imaginando y probando distintas combinaciones.

I made some cushions and pouches for make-up or pencils or whatever you want to keep in. I loved the technique, had fun making the stamps as well as imagining and trying different ways to combine them.

Y lo mejor es saber que cada trabajo puede ser totalmente distinto al anterior. Es a prueba de aburrimiento, siempre se pueden encontrar nuevos patrones en el que no habíamos pensado antes y cambiar la paleta de colores según la ocasión o el humor del momento.

And the best part is to know that each work can be totally different from the previous one. No possible boring, you can always find new patterns you haven’t thought of before and change the palette according to the occasion or the mood.

Diciembre ya está con nosotros

Y llegó Diciembre y con el las fiestas, los apuros, las reuniones para saludar a todos como si no nos fuéramos a ver al día siguiente, las compras y la deco.

December has come and Holidays with it, the rush, the meetings to greet everyone as if we were not going to see  eachother the next day, the shoppings and the deco.

Estamos de Feria

Estamos de feria y casi listas para el encuentro que será este fin de semana. Justo a tiempo para presentar los nuevos teñidos índigo que han quedado super lindos.

Tiñiendo telas con índigo natural

He descubierto recientemente (tarde, pero mejor que nunca) el maravilloso mundo del teñido con índigo natural que ha sido utilizado por siglos por distintos pueblos alrededor del planeta.
Es fascinante, casi mágico. Cuando sale la tela del baño es de un color verde oscuro, para nada interesante, pero a medida que se va aireando se transforma en verde azulado, azul verdoso y finalmente en un hermoso azul cielo, tanto más intenso cuantas más veces se repita el proceso.
Después de analizar las opciones de recetas para el teñido - porque el índigo no es soluble en agua, necesita de ciertos agregados para hacerlo reaccionar- opté por el método más natural (bueno, también porque encontré cierta dificultad para obtener los reactivos, que en otras partes del mundo son de uso corriente pero acá no y mi impaciencia natural no me permitió tomarme el tiempo necesario para buscarlos y utilicé elementos que tenía al alcance) y que en definitiva también es el más ecológico.
Primero preparé la mezcolanza en un frasco aparte y lo dejé fermentar un ratito para luego volcarlo al balde con agua caliente que tenía listo.

I have discovered recently (late, but better than never) the wonderful world of natural indigo dyeing, which has been used for centuries by people around the planet.

It’s fascinating, almost magical. When the fabric is taken out of the vat is of a dark green color, not at all interesting, but in the air it’s becoming bluish green, greenish blue and finally a gorgeous sky blue, the more intense the more times the process is repeated.

After considering the options for recipes for dyeing – because indigo is not soluble in water, needs of certain elements to make it react – I chose the natural method (well, also because I couldn’t find all the elements, that in other part of the world are of current use but not here and my impatience didn’t allow me to take the necessary to time to search them, so I used what I had at hand) which ultimately is the most ecological as well.

First I prepared the hodgepodge in a separate flask, and let it ferment for a while to pour it lately into the bucket with hot water that I had already prepared.

Mientras esperaba armé los atados shibori de formas diferentes para ver que resultados obtenía.

In the meantime I prepared the shibori bundles in different ways to see what I could get.

Y acá vamos, con las manos en la masa. El recipiente era un poco pequeño pero es que después de lo que esperé para conseguir este pigmento, no quería gastar ni de un solo gramo de más.

And here we go, red-handed (or should I say blue-handed). The container was a little bit small but after all I had to wait to get this dye,  I didn't want to spend a single gram unnecessarily.

pero al contacto con el aire se van oxidando y tornando al azul. Esto para mí es casi como magia, quedé absolutamente fascinada porque tenerlo en tus propias manos no es lo mismo que leer al respecto.

but they’re oxidizing in the air and turning blue. For me this is almost like magic, I was absolutely fascinated, because to have it in your own hands is not the same that read about.

Y así quedaron los guantes, mis manos un poco mejor...aunque no totalmente indemnes.

And these were my gloves, my hands a lillte better.....but not completely unscathed.

Ahora solo hay que transformarlos en objetos para la casa o tal vez algún accesorio de moda, ya veré y se los contaré la próxima vez.

Now I only have to transform them in objects for the house or perhaps some fashion accessory, I'll see and will tell you next time.
